Purple Christmas: A Community Tradition of Care
Purple Christmas is a community tradition rooted in service, dignity, and belonging for military-connected children. What began as a grassroots act of care became a defining expression of the Home of the Military Child, demonstrating how collective responsibility can evolve into lasting legacy.

Led by the Military Children’s Six Foundation in connection with the early development of the Military Child World Expo, Purple Christmas reflects the values that continue to guide MCWEF today: community first, children at the center, and service grounded in respect.
WHAT IS PURPLE CHRISTMAS
A Tradition Built on Belonging
Purple Christmas is not a holiday campaign. It is a community practice, one that recognizes military-connected children through presence, participation, and shared responsibility.

Each season, volunteers come together over multiple weeks to prepare gifts and create moments of recognition for children whose lives are shaped by service, transition, and resilience. The focus is not on charity, but on belonging, ensuring military children feel seen, valued, and remembered.

COMMUNITY IMPACT — 2024
The Beginning
In December 2024, Purple Christmas launched as a DMV-wide community effort. Over the course of the season:
-
877 gifts were wrapped and prepared
-
100+ volunteers participated
-
Families and community members served together across multiple days
This first year established Purple Christmas as a sustained act of care rather than a one-day activity, setting the tone for what would follow.
COMMUNITY IMPACT — 2025
A Growing Tradition
Building on the foundation of the first year, Purple Christmas returned in December 2025, reflecting both growth and continuity.
From December 5 through December 24, 2025:
-
972 gifts were wrapped and prepared
-
80+ volunteers participated
-
The community sustained service across nearly three weeks
The 2025 season reinforced that Purple Christmas was becoming a tradition—one the community returned to with intention and commitment.

FROM COMMUNITY ACTION TO NATIONAL STEWARDSHIP
Where the Expo Began
Purple Christmas stands as the origin moment of what would later become the Military Child World Expo and, ultimately, the stewardship role now held by the Military Child World Expo Foundation.
The tradition demonstrated:
-
Community readiness before institutional structure
-
Care before celebration
-
Belonging before branding
These principles continue to inform the Expo and the broader Home of the Military Child framework.

LEGACY STATEMENT
Carrying the Tradition Forward
Purple Christmas reminds us that institutions are built by people who show up first.

As MCWEF continues its national role, Purple Christmas remains a living example of how communities can come together to honor military-connected children and families, not only during the holidays, but across generations.
